Your hotels Are you having interference problems on your networks? Do you have a renewed WiFi technology but you do not get the desired connection quality? Have you heard of high performance wireless networks? In the following article you will know what are these types of networks and how they can help your hotel to avoid further interference.

What is wireless technology?

Wireless technology refers to wireless or wireless networks that allow the communication of computers, devices or any workstation that are in different places, since they do not require any physical means to be able to connect.

It is a system that has aroused great interest in recent times, because it offers a lot of comfort to the user and allows greater ease when installing equipment and great flexibility when using it. We can find two main types of wireless networks:

  • long distance. Allow transfer information between computers located in different geographical areas. They are known as MAN Metropolitan Area Network and its transmission speeds are relatively low: from 4.8 to 19.2 Kbps.
  • short distance. They are used to exchange information between equipment that is separated by a small space: For example, on company computers located in the same building. This type of wireless technology is known as LAN. Local Area Network. Their speeds are between 280 Kbps and 2 Mbps.

¿CWhat has been the evolution up to the high performance wireless networks?

Being honest, the truth is that wireless technology or WiFi technology does not need too many presentations. It has been with us for more than 20 years and, especially in the last decade, it has become so popular that most people use it constantly to connect to the internet. What has happened is that its development has been, and continues to be, spectacular.

In its beginnings, the WiFi connection was limited to mobile devices: smartphones, tablets and laptops, and its speed and charging capacity were discreet and limited. As WiFi connection quality improved, wireless networks began to be used on desktop computers as well as smart TVs and other kinds of devices. Until today, when the classic Ethernet cable has been, little by little, relegated.

What we know as Wi-Fi is actually a standard: a technology with standards, rules and specifications that all companies involved in its manufacture must comply with. In reality, WiFi is simply the trademark, since the standard or protocol is called IEEE 802.11 (an acronym for Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, which is the body that validates the standards related to this type of technology).

How has wireless technology evolved since its creation more than 20 years ago? Obviously for the better. Each of the updates that have been developed (identified by a letter at the end of the IEEE code, that is, 802.11a, 802.11b, onwards) have been offering more stability, security, and greater speed in sending and receiving data.

WiFi 6: the optimal solution for the simultaneous connection of a large number of devices

Despite the fact that, as we have mentioned, the various updates of the wireless network were providing some improvements in the operation of wireless networks, the WiFi 5 standard was not designed for a scenario characterized by the existence of many devices connected to the same wireless network. .

The problem is that the wireless networks installed in companies or establishments of medium or large size, like hotels, they have to provide services to a large number of devices. What happens then? That many devices compete to monopolize the resources they need. What's the score? That many of them do not achieve a connection with the requirements of quality, speed and stability required by users and the type of current content?

If you dedicate yourself to hotel management, it is very possible that, in your day to day, you have to deal with this problem. And that the insufficient quality of your hotel's Wi-Fi is one of the usual complaints from some of your guests.

Fortunately, the successor standard to Wi-Fi 5, the so-called WiFI 6 technology, has entered the scene. It is a spectacular evolution of the previous standard, a high-performance system designed to manage the simultaneous connection of a large number of computers to the same wireless network.

What should a good wireless network design for your hotel include?

Do you need to improve the internet connection of your hotel? In that case, the first thing you have to do is make an optimal design of your hotel's wireless networks, focused on these two main objectives:

  1. Provide comprehensive coverage to the hotel to have coverage in the maximum possible space, installing a sufficient number of equipment, with the necessary technical characteristics and locating them in the ideal places.

  1. Control users' internet access through a captive portal and manage service quality with an access controller, which guarantees the minimum bandwidth necessary for each user and prioritizing essential services, such as: email, Skype or web browsing.

Once the objectives have been defined, the access design should determine a series of basic points installation related:

  • Types of services that you want to use: VoIP, video and corporate applications
  • access policy that you want to apply to the network.
  • Location and characteristics of the .
  • Type of installation of the access points of each zone.
  • Wiring to each access point.
  • existence of signal degrading elements: walls, walls, etc. and materials from which it is built.
  • Evaluation of the antennas integrated in the equipment and external antennas: efficiency, visual impact,
  • Wi-Fi standards and radio technology needed.

In order to carry out a preliminary design of your hotel's Wi-Fi network, which is  rigorous and objective and that once implemented it works and can respond to the present and future needs of the hotel and its guests, it is highly recommended to carry out a complete and quality consultancy through a specialized external company.
